SSN application process
I’m a green card holder — I’d like to know the SSN application process, and whether a parent can apply on behalf of a child under 20. In other words, I’d like to know if the applicant needs to be physically present in the U.S. themselves.
To apply for an SSN separately, you need to go to a local Social Security office in the U.S. It’s not possible to apply without coming to the U.S. For someone under 18, a birth certificate is required — you can get a basic certificate issued, along with a translation and your green card card.
