Can I extend my stay after entering visa-free (ESTA)?
I entered on ESTA (visa-free). Something has come up, and I’d like to extend my stay — is that possible? I’d also like to travel a bit more and look into other job opportunities.

Visa-free entry is exactly that — visa-free — so there is no status basis on which to extend it.
An ESTA travel authorization generally cannot be extended. However, if a serious issue such as an accident occurs, that is handled separately, so please consult with an attorney in that situation.
