Can I legally maintain a former employer’s DS-2019 after my contract with them ends?
Hello, I’m working in the U.S. on J-1 status.
I’d like to know if I can legally maintain my former employer’s DS-2019 after our contract has ended.
And if I’ve filed for a different status, I’d like to know if the employer’s DS-2019 remains legally valid in that case as well.
An employer’s DS-2019 ends when their contract ends. However, if you’ve filed for a different status and it’s pending, this doesn’t extend the previous employer’s DS-2019 — rather, you’re considered to be maintaining lawful status during the waiting period for that pending change-of-status application.
