I received a J-1 waiver and need to move to a different status, but the company’s attorney is asking for the approval letter.
I accidentally lost the approval letter and have no way to get it back, and it’s difficult to obtain from USCIS. I’m not sure what to do in this situation.

Even without the J-1 waiver approval I-797 notice, you can still apply if you have a favorable waiver recommendation letter from DOS. Please check whether you have that.
Alternatively, since you’ve already made a request to USCIS, while you wait for USCIS to respond, you could start an H-1B transfer right away using the Receipt Number.
