I’d like to eventually work under an H-1B work visa — timing and procedure for applying
I’m a student on F-1 and would like to eventually work under an H-1B work visa — I’d like to know the timing and procedure for applying.
My OPT expires in mid-May, and I’d also like to know what ‘Cap Gap’ means when applying for a work visa.
H-1B registration/lottery happens every March, and filing opens starting April 1st. Once you’re registered and selected in the lottery, you’ll receive notification, and you can then file for a change of status to H-1B. If your OPT expires in mid-May, you’d fall under Cap Gap, and your OPT could be extended through the end of September. If your employer qualifies as cap-exempt, feel free to ask separately about that.
