I’m in the middle of my green card case — where and how do I apply for a Social Security number?

Unfortunately, this is usually something attorneys file for together with the rest of the case.

In this situation, you need to apply for a Social Security number in person at a Social Security office after receiving your work permit (EAD card). It typically takes about two weeks after applying.

The documents needed are your work permit and passport. Go to the Social Security office closest to your address, and arrive early in the morning to wait in line so you don’t waste time.
