Master’s program in accounting
Hello, I’m attending college in the U.S. I have a lot of questions about obtaining a green card, so I’m reaching out.
1. I’m currently in a combined bachelor’s/master’s accounting program and expect to finish the master’s within 2 years — is it more advantageous for green card purposes (once employed) to have completed the master’s degree?
2. I’m planning to work as an accountant — is accounting a field where sponsorship is relatively easy to obtain?
3. Is there anything I should know or prepare in advance regarding employment-based immigration while still a student?
Answer: It just comes down to whether an employer is willing to sponsor your green card — there’s no inherent advantage or disadvantage either way. Whether they’re willing to sponsor/whether you qualify is what matters.
2. I’m planning to work as an accountant — is accounting a field where sponsorship is relatively easy to obtain?
Answer: As long as somewhere is willing to sponsor you, it’s fine. Hiring decisions are entirely up to the owner.
3. Is there anything I should know or prepare in advance regarding employment-based immigration while still a student?
Answer: Check how many years you have left until your status (including OPT) expires, and if you can’t complete the process within that time, you’ll need to think about how to maintain your status. Employment-based immigration typically takes about 2 years.
