Question about sponsorship through a sibling

When one sibling is a green card holder, figuring out how other siblings can obtain a green card can seem complicated.

One common approach: after one sibling obtains a green card, they sponsor their parents; once the parents get their green card, they in turn sponsor their children (i.e., the original sibling’s other siblings). But so many people use this approach that a long waitlist has built up — reaching your place in line can take anywhere from about 10 to 15 years. If the green card holder becomes a citizen, their earlier sponsorship petition can sometimes be updated to a citizen’s petition, moving things up somewhat in priority — though since most petitioners eventually become citizens and try to do the same thing to speed up family sponsorship, this update may not always make a big practical difference. Still, since most people forget to do this, it can be a meaningful step if you remember to update the petition to a citizen’s sponsorship once your family member naturalizes. In general, rather than one sibling directly sponsoring another, sponsoring the parents first, and then having the parents sponsor the children, tends to be the fastest route.
