What is the CPT program? Is it different from OPT?
I’d like to know what the CPT program is. Is it different from regular OPT?
If there’s a choice between the two, can I simply pick either one?

Work authorization obtained after graduation is called OPT, while work authorization obtained while still enrolled in classes is called CPT. Think of it as a kind of field training/internship. There are many courses of study that require field training, and this is where CPT comes in. Of course, you’re paid wages for the work. You can separately check with your school whether CPT is available and decide accordingly.
