I was told in a consultation that if I can prove the marriage was fraudulent, I can still convert my green card to a permanent one.

First, you would file a joint-filing waiver petition (Form I-751). Through this waiver process, you can first receive 6 months of work authorization and travel authorization. Then, within that period, you can request an interview to closely examine whether the marriage was fraudulent, and through that process, you can receive your green card on your own.
