Whether I can sponsor a child
Hello, I have a question about family sponsorship.
My older sister entered the U.S. on a tourist visa with her son about 13 years ago. For a few years, they maintained status, moving from tourist to student visa, but eventually became out of status. My nephew was 5 at entry and has now graduated high school and is attending community college. My questions are:
1. My 81-year-old mother would like to sponsor her 50-year-old daughter (my sister).
2. My mother currently receives state benefits like SSI, HISS, and Food Stamps.
3. The purpose of the sponsorship is that the daughter’s caregiving is needed.
4. Once the sponsorship application is filed, a registration number is issued — if my sister is stopped in a random check, can this receipt number alone prove lawful residence and prevent deportation?
Hello, unfortunately, while a child can sponsor a parent, a parent sponsoring an adult child is difficult.
