Whether immigration status gets checked even for a traffic stop or speeding ticket
Hello. I’ve been anxious lately — I’d like to know if immigration status gets checked even for a traffic stop or speeding ticket.
I heard someone was caught near the Canadian border and immediately deported — could even a ticket be a problem?
Generally, traffic police aren’t immigration enforcement agents, so their job is different, and they don’t check immigration status. However, within 100 miles of a border like Canada, ICE or related agencies under Homeland Security, rather than police, can conduct enforcement at their discretion. They even have authority to conduct enforcement checks unrelated to any traffic violation.
