Student status maintenance concerns while preparing to marry a citizen boyfriend
I’m preparing to marry my citizen boyfriend, and have already completed marriage license registration and am about to marry.
My first question is whether I can file for a green card right after marrying — looking around, I’ve seen people file after waiting 3 months, so I’d like to know if a waiting period is needed.
My second question is whether I can drop out of school right away, without maintaining it, in this case.
Online sources say I need to maintain lawful status until the point of I-485 —
if filing for a green card right away is fine, can I drop out of school after filing I-485?
If I need to wait 90 days to file for the green card, I plan to keep attending school until then.

Once you marry and go through the green card process with USCIS, you’ll ultimately receive your green card. However, please don’t quit school before marrying — wait until things are certain. This is because it’s fairly common, in the course of relationships, for people to quit school partway through and then also run into trouble with the green card process alongside the marriage.
