Whether I can quit school while continuously maintaining I-20 on student status once I’ve filed for a green card
Hello, I’ve been continuously extending my student status through I-20, and recently got married. I’d like to know if I no longer need to maintain I-20 in this case.
In other words, I’d like to know if I can just quit school right away.
Assuming you’ve married and are genuinely going through the green card process, you no longer need to maintain I-20. However, there have been cases where people gave up I-20 ahead of marriage, only for the marriage to fall through, resulting in a status collapse — so we recommend carefully considering marrying first, filing for the green card, and only then quitting school.
