Can I change from H-1B to F-1?
I’m currently working on an H-1B work visa. The work is difficult and the pay is low, so I’m thinking of quitting and going to graduate school.
I’d like to know if I can change from H-1B to F-1. Once I leave the company, I won’t be receiving paychecks anymore — what would my status be during that gap period?
A change of status is possible. One thing to be careful about: if you leave the company first while on H-1B and file for F-1 afterward, creating a long gap in between, this can create a problem maintaining your H-1B status — so we recommend obtaining your I-20 and having F-1 approved before leaving your job, if possible. Also, don’t completely rule out the chance that F-1 could be denied. For reference, if you later pursue an employment-based green card, your H-1B status maintenance and duration will be scrutinized.
