I have an urgent need to leave the country. However, my green card has already passed its expiration date. I’d like to know whether not renewing it means I’m treated as no longer having a green card.

First, even after the 10-year validity period on your green card has passed, your permanent resident status itself does not change — only the card’s validity period has expired.
This is similar to how, even after your driver’s license expires, you don’t have to retake the driving test to remain a licensed driver.
Renewing a green card typically takes about 4 months, so if you need to leave the U.S. during that window, we recommend making an InfoPass appointment, visiting a USCIS office, and having a temporary one-year valid green card stamp placed in your passport before you leave. When you apply for the card and go in for fingerprinting, they’ll also affix a one-year valid sticker on the back of your card. Typically, about 4–6 months after fingerprinting, your new card arrives by mail.
