The priority date category is closed. But my case number has already been generated — is that possible?

Even if a priority date category is currently closed, once your petition is approved, the case can still be transferred to the National Visa Center, generating a case number ahead of time. Generally, though, the case number is issued along with a letter saying to wait until the priority date opens up.
