I was pursuing my spouse-sponsored green card on my own, but it was denied. Looking at the reason, it says entry denial — thinking back, I did have a short period of unlawful presence in the past.
In this case, I’d like to know if I need to appeal, and how to proceed. Also, there were several RFEs — could it be because I didn’t respond to them properly?

In this case, you first need to file a Petition requesting a waiver of the inadmissibility (entry denial) before anything else. If your spouse had an overstay and this was filed without knowing that, since it was simply entered as-is without addressing it, there’s a high likelihood you’d also receive additional RFEs.
