How much financial capacity does a U.S. citizen need for a marriage-based green card case?
I’m applying for a green card for my spouse, who is a U.S. citizen.
I’d like to know what level of financial capacity is required of the citizen under federal guidelines.
A U.S. citizen’s financial capacity must be at least 125% of the federal poverty guidelines (HHS Poverty Guidelines for Affidavit of Support).
In other words, if 100% represents the poverty line for a household of one, you need to show financial standing at least 25% above that baseline. The required threshold also changes depending on your current household size, including the sponsored spouse. Please see the link below for the current Federal Poverty Guidelines.
