I called a Korean-run taxi to go to JFK for a brief trip to Korea. It was a phone number I’d commonly seen used. As soon as I got out at the airport, a police car suddenly pulled up and detained both the driver and me, asking how much I’d paid for the fare. The officer said I could be arrested if I didn’t disclose the amount, so I told them, and they wrote down my passport, phone number, email, and even my home address. I’d like to know if this could put me at a disadvantage in my green card application.
It seems like this was likely about the taxi itself lacking TLC licensing or operating illegally, and they were trying to catch the driver. As long as you weren’t issued a separate ticket, this likely won’t cause you any major problem personally. As for your green card, as long as you haven’t committed a crime showing moral turpitude or have no criminal record, this shouldn’t cause a significant issue.
