I’d like to know the obligations of a financial co-sponsor.
An acquaintance has asked me to serve as their financial co-sponsor, saying it’s something anyone typically does and shouldn’t be a big deal.
Still, I’d like to know in detail what obligations a financial sponsor actually takes on.
I’d also like to know how long this financial sponsorship obligation lasts.
If the sponsored family member later receives certain public benefits, the financial sponsor — along with any joint co-sponsor — must reimburse the cost to the agency that provided those benefits. This financial sponsorship obligation continues until:
(1) the sponsored family member becomes a U.S. citizen, or
(2) they’ve worked for approximately 10 years, or
(3) they pass away, or
(4) they return to Korea and give up their green card.
