I’m a Canadian citizen. I registered my marriage to a U.S. citizen and plan to work in Canada as a commuter couple.

Since you don’t plan to come to the U.S. right away, I think it would be good to plan on filing about a year before you plan to come, but there are options.

Even after obtaining a green card, you can obtain a Reentry Permit to maintain your green card, which extends it by 2 more years. So if you decide there’s no need to delay, you could file now, obtain the 2-year Reentry Permit, live in Canada, and then re-enter later.
