Is there anything I can do when USCIS processing is taking too long?
I’m hoping either my work permit or green card is issued before my OPT expires. But if it doesn’t come soon, my company says they can’t keep waiting for me. My attorney has no answer for how to speed things up. Do you have any suggestions?
It usually takes about 2–4 months, but if you’re still experiencing delays beyond that, here are some options:
1. Schedule an InfoPass appointment and ask why it’s taking so long (InfoPass information can be found via the useful links section on this site).
2. File a case with the USCIS Ombudsman requesting that they follow up. The Ombudsman’s role is to help resolve grievances and assist individuals or companies with issues in their USCIS case.
Administrative mistakes happen fairly often, and the Ombudsman handles these kinds of issues. Note, however, that if your question is about immigration law itself, the Ombudsman won’t help with that — you’ll need to ask an immigration attorney.
