Ongoing income from Korea while on student status
I’m in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa.
To cover living expenses, I’ve been working long-term as a freelancer for a Korean company based in Korea. I’d like to know if USCIS could later discover this income source (right now it’s fine since I’m a nonresident, but if classified as a resident and required to report foreign assets, this could become an issue), and whether this could negatively affect my green card application later.
Basically, no, this isn’t allowed. If a student generates income in Korea, this can create both tax issues and immigration-law problems. It depends on how large the income is, but if it exceeds around $20,000, we think it should be handled with the help of an immigration attorney.
