I’m considering participating in a business accelerator program run by a different university. When I asked the school, they told me this program doesn’t count as employment, so I can’t extend my DS-2019 through Academic Training. So I considered changing status to B-1 instead — I’d like to know if this is a good option, or even a viable one.

A B-1 visa allows participation in business-related short programs, conventions, or conferences. Even with a change to B-1, that only gives you 6 months, so if your purpose is educational, please also consider a change to F-1 instead.
