If the ‘2-year home-residency requirement’ applies to your J-1 (exchange visitor) or J-2 (accompanying family) visa, you must return to and reside in your home country for at least 2 years after completing the exchange program. However, if you apply for a change to a different status within the U.S., or apply for a visa or immigrant visa under the H, L, or K categories during the home-residency period, you must first obtain a pardon from the home-residency requirement through a J waiver.
