I understand employment-based immigration is divided into skilled and unskilled categories — I’d like to know the difference. Does it always require having a specific skill or a strong academic background to be considered skilled?

The distinction between skilled and unskilled is based on the position the sponsoring company is hiring for: if it requires a bachelor’s degree or higher, or relevant experience, it’s processed as skilled; if the position doesn’t require a skilled background, a college degree, or specialized technical knowledge, it’s classified and processed as unskilled. A position that doesn’t require specialized skill or knowledge is unskilled, and the green card process can proceed under the unskilled category as well.
