Hello. I recently arrived in the U.S. and am about to get married. I’d like to file for a family-based green card,
and your office advised me it would be better to file after 90 days.

The 90-day rule refers to the idea that if your intent at entry to the U.S. was, for example, studying or traveling, you’re expected to maintain that same intent once you’re in the U.S. — even though that intent can change over time, at least 90 days generally need to pass before a change of heart is recognized as legitimate. So you can think of it as: only after 90 days have passed will an intent to reside permanently (i.e., pursue a U.S. green card) be recognized without suspicion. Some people do receive their green card even without waiting the full 90 days, but it’s best to follow this guideline whenever possible.
