I’d like to know whether being sponsored through an acquaintance can cause problems.
A friend of mine in the U.S. agreed to sponsor me, and I’m currently going through the unskilled-worker green card process from Korea. During the interview, the consular officer asked whether I have family, relatives, or friends in the U.S., and who paid the attorney’s fees. I’d like to know why they ask these questions.
These questions are meant to determine whether the case involves a sham arrangement. It suggests they suspect a personal relationship with the sponsor.
USCIS screens for cases where a green card is obtained through sponsorship based on a personal relationship rather than a genuine hiring process.
This is because it is not a genuine hiring process.
