Whether my prior status disappears once I change status

A change of status literally means changing your status, so thinking of it as a ‘Transfer’ can be confusing. Your prior status doesn’t disappear immediately — once the change-of-status application (under your new status) is filed and a result comes out, the previous status is then automatically extinguished. Also, after changing status, if you leave the U.S., you’ll need to separately apply for a visa matching your newly changed status, either abroad or in Korea. Since a separate consular interview is required, you can think of it as being essentially the same as applying for a brand-new visa.
