Whether receiving unemployment benefits could create difficulty when sponsoring a future spouse for marriage
Hello. After marrying, I’m going through the green card process for my spouse. But the company I worked at closed, so I ended up applying for unemployment benefits.
I’d like to know if this could create difficulty for sponsoring my spouse. I’d also like to know if my unemployment benefits would count as public assistance and work against me.
Unemployment benefits are your own right based on insurance contributions, so they don’t count as public assistance, and since the tax filing submitted for spouse sponsorship is also just the total from your W-2 for the past year, this shouldn’t cause any issue for the green card process.
