Whether tax filing submission is mandatory when changing status from OPT
I’ve been in the U.S. for nearly 2 years on F1 STEM OPT, and I haven’t filed taxes during that time.
I’d like to know if, when changing to a different work or immigrant visa (H1, L1, J1, E, etc.), USCIS would ask for tax filing records from my current F1 status.
If so, I’d like to know if I can create and submit past records retroactively, or if it’s simply too late and there’s no way around it.
Hello. When changing status from OPT, it’s natural that they’d check whether OPT status was properly maintained. However, whether they’d go so far as to request tax filings is unknown. Tax filings could be requested as additional evidence, or it might just be overlooked. Basically, you should have it prepared just in case.
