How to apply for a Social Security number while a green card case is pending

You need to apply for a Social Security number in person at a Social Security office after receiving your Employment Authorization Document (EAD card). It typically takes about two weeks after applying.

Go to the Social Security office closest to your address, and arrive early in the morning to wait in line so you don’t waste time.
