I’m out of status — I’d like to know if I need to file for an I-601 waiver.
I’m out of status, and I’ve heard there’s been an enforcement crackdown recently,
so someone told me I should file an I-601 waiver to avoid this — is that appropriate?

An I-601 Waiver is a petition requesting exemption from entry denial upon re-entry for someone who was previously out of status. So there’s no need to file this while you’re in the U.S., and you also wouldn’t be eligible. If your U.S. entry was unlawful, through Canada or Mexico, this would be a necessary step for a future green card process.
